This site has nothing to do with the "Riggwelter Ale" from the "Black Sheep Brewery" but is the Home site for the "Mottershead Family" however we agree that "Riggwelter Ale" is one of the best Ales from this brewery and possible one of the best bitters brewed in the UK. Based in Masham in North Yorkshire the Black Sheep Brewery have been brewing since 1992 and now have five Ales on sale. These are Black Sheep Ale 3.8% ABV, Black Sheep Best Bitter 4.4% ABV, Monthy Python's Holy Grail 4.7% ABV, Golden Sheep 4.7% ABV and Riggwelter 5.7% ABV.

Black Sheep Ale is brewed using traditional and time honoured methods which achieve a beer of the highest quality. It is a superb premium bitter which is brewed in restored antique brewing vessels and fermented in the unusual Yorkshire Square system to produce a distinctive robust ale. Brewed with many generous handfuls of choice Golding hops, it is full flavoured ale with a rich fruit nose. The bittersweet malty taste is followed by an uncompromising long, dry and bitter finish. This beer was the first, most successful, of all of our bottled beers ABV 4.4% 500 ml bottle

BLACK SHEEP - HOLY GRAIL

Another fine addition to the Black Sheep Brewery range of premium bottled ales, our Holy Grail Bitter was specially commissioned to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Monty Python. It has a distinctive taste with plenty of fruity hops, and is full flavoured with a dry and refreshing bitterness. ABV 4.7% 500ml bottle

BLACK SHEEP - EMMERDALE

A modern classic created with a combination of the finest, natural ingredients, time-honoured methods and Black Sheep’s unique Masham brewery. Emmerdale is the very best of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales – in a bottle. Wonderful on its own or the perfect accompaniment to meat dishes, this is a full & richly flavoured golden ale. Notice the distinctive balance between the flavours of fruity Golding variety hops, Maris Otter malted barley and demerara sugar. Strong and refreshingly long, with a dry and bitter finish. BLACK SHEEP - RIGGWELTER

Riggwelter: from the Old Norse: rigg-back and velte – to overturn. When a sheep is on its back and cannot get up without help, local Yorkshire dialect says it is rigged or riggwelted. Riggwelter is a full flavoured strong Yorkshire ale brewed using the unusual Yorkshire Square fermentation system. The result is a well balanced, deep chestnut coloured ale. With it's distinctive roast malt, Golding hops and banana fruit aromas, Riggwelter has a strong and refreshingly dry finish of hops and roasted barley malt. ABV 5.7% 500 ml bottle

Golden Sheep is a fine pale ale brewed using time honoured methods and fermented in our Yorkshire Square vessels, to give full flavour and a dry and refreshing bitterness. BLACK SHEEP - BEST BITTER

A well hopped, light golden session bitter with a distinctive, dry, refreshing taste enjoyed through a rich creamy head. Brewed in traditional cast iron and copper vessels using the finest ingredients. ABV 3.8%

A full flavoured ale with a rich fruit nose brewed with many generous handfuls of choice Golding hops giving a bittersweet malty taste, followed by an uncompromisingly long, dry and bitter finish. This is the beer that is bottled as Black Sheep Ale. ABV 4.4%

BLACK SHEEP - EMMERDALE

Distinctive balance between the flavours of fruity Golding variety hops, Maris Otter malted barley and demerara sugar. Strong and refreshingly long, dry and bitter finish. ABV 5.0%

A deep chestnut brown beer with a rich near-white head and the aroma of fresh roasted coffee. A wonderfully complex palate with hints of coffee, bananas and liquorice leading to a classic Golding hop finish. ABV 5.7%
